Discover more about Monastery of Saint John Lampadistes

The Monastery of Saint John Lampadistes, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, is a remarkable testament to Cyprus's Byzantine and post-Byzantine heritage. Located in the Marathasa Valley, near the village of Kalopanayiotis, this monastic complex is a treasure trove of religious art, architecture, and history. The monastery's origins trace back to the 11th century with the construction of the original church dedicated to Saint Herakleidios. Over the centuries, the complex expanded to include the Church of Saint John Lampadistis, built in the 12th century above the saint's tomb, and the Latin Chapel, added later during the Frankish rule. This unique blend of architectural styles and religious influences reflects the island's diverse cultural history. The interconnected churches are adorned with a stunning array of frescoes, spanning from the 11th to the 16th centuries. These well-preserved paintings showcase the evolution of Byzantine art, with intricate details and vibrant colors that depict biblical scenes, saints, and decorative motifs. The frescoes in the Church of Saint Herakleidios feature rare representations, such as the Holy Handkerchief, while the Latin Chapel boasts Italo-Byzantine art, combining Byzantine and Italian Renaissance elements. The main church of Saint Herakleidios is a domed cross-in-square structure, while the Church of Saint John Lampadistis and the Latin Chapel feature barrel-vaulted designs. The complex also includes a narthex, built in the 15th century, and other monastic buildings. Visitors can explore the complex, marveling at the intricate frescoes, admiring the unique architectural styles, and soaking in the serene atmosphere. The monastery also houses a museum with sacred artifacts, providing insights into monastic life and the spiritual significance of the site.
