Discover more about Panagia tou Moutoulla

The Church of Panagia tou Moutoulla, located in the mountainous region of Moutoullas village, is a significant cultural and historical landmark. This small, single-aisled chapel, dating back to 1280, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its well-preserved frescoes and unique architectural style. The church was founded by Ioannis of Moutoullas and his wife, Irene, who are depicted in the church holding a model of the structure. It's believed to have possibly served as a private chapel for the family. The church's interior showcases a series of frescoes dating back to the 13th century, which are the only precisely dated series from that period surviving in Cyprus. These frescoes, though partially damaged, depict various biblical scenes and offer insight into Byzantine art of the era. The unknown painter's style reflects a blend of Byzantine traditions and contemporary Western influences. Key features include the Virgin Mary in the apse, Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and unique depictions of saints. The church itself features a steep-pitched timber roof, characteristic of the Troodos region. A narthex, or enclosed portico, was added later, extending to the north and west sides. The village of Moutoullas is known for its ongoing tradition of carved wooden basins and surrounding orchards. Visiting Panagia tou Moutoulla offers a unique opportunity to explore Cypriot culture, religious history, and Byzantine art.
