Discover more about Church of St Castulus

Located in the heart of Prague’s Old Town, the Church of St. Castulus (Kostel svatého Haštala) is a captivating blend of architectural styles, primarily Gothic with Romanesque and Baroque elements. It stands on Haštalské náměstí, near the Convent of Saint Agnes. The church is the only one in the Czech Republic dedicated to Saint Castulus. Built between 1375 and 1399 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church documented in 1234, St. Castulus has a rich history. This older church was a key Romanesque building along the route from a ford near St. Valentine's, past the Jewish settlement, to “na Poříčí”. In the 14th and 15th centuries, renovations included altars dedicated to St. Catherine, St. Virgin Mary, St. Margaret, and the Body of God. A cemetery and parsonage were also located near the church during this time. Architecturally, the church features a stone structure with brick and block elements. The Gothic design incorporates a polygon-shaped choir, a main nave, and a southern nave. The northern nave was later designed as a double-nave hall during the reign of King Wenceslaus IV. The interior boasts subtle ribs with plant decorations, pyramidal consoles, and paintings in the sacristy. The church's Baroque influence comes from renovations made after a fire in 1689, which included replacing the original vault with a barrel vault. Throughout its history, St. Castulus Church has served as a significant religious and community hub. Once the burial site of Prague's executioner, it connects visitors to the city's macabre past. Today, it welcomes visitors to admire its architecture, artwork, and serene atmosphere.
