Hvězda Park: A Renaissance Star in Prague

Obora Hvězda, also known as the Star Game Reserve, is an 84-hectare forest park located in Prague 6, about 6 kilometers west of the city center. This protected natural monument, once a royal hunting ground, offers a peaceful retreat with historical significance and diverse recreational opportunities. Established in the mid-16th century by Ferdinand I, the park's name, meaning "star" in Czech, is inspired by the unique six-pointed star shape of the Letohrádek Hvězda villa. This Renaissance villa, designed by Ferdinand of Tyrol, served as a luxurious retreat for the royals and a hub for cultural and social events. Today, the villa hosts art exhibitions and provides a glimpse into the park's rich history. The park's history dates back to 993 when Duke Boleslaus II donated the forest to the Břevnov Monastery. During the Renaissance, it was transformed into a walled game reserve. The park also holds historical importance as the site of the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, a pivotal event in the Thirty Years' War. Hvězda Park offers a variety of activities and sights, including flat footpaths for walking, cycling, and wheelchair access, as well as forest trails for a peaceful escape into nature.
