National Memorial on Vítkov Hill, Prague Travel Guide

Perched atop Vítkov Hill in Prague's Žižkov district, the National Memorial stands as a powerful symbol of Czech resilience and statehood. Built between 1928 and 1938, the memorial honors Czechoslovak legionaries who fought in World War I and later became a significant site in the nation's complex history.The hill itself is historically significant, as it was the site of the Battle of Vítkov Hill in 1420, where Hussite forces led by Jan Žižka defeated Catholic crusaders. Today, the memorial complex includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a moving tribute to those who died serving the Czech Republic, and offers insight into the nation's past.Dominating the site is the colossal bronze equestrian statue of Jan Žižka, one of the largest of its kind in the world. The memorial also provides stunning panoramic views of Prague, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Inside, visitors can explore exhibitions detailing Czech history, including milestones such as the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918 and the fall of communism in 1989.After 1948, the memorial was used to promote the communist regime; between 1954 and 1962, it housed the mausoleum of Klement Gottwald. The memorial has been managed by the Military History Institute Prague since June 1, 2024.
