The hill itself is historically significant, as it was the site of the Battle of Vítkov Hill in 1420, where Hussite forces led by Jan Žižka defeated Catholic crusaders. Today, the memorial complex includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a moving tribute to those who died serving the Czech Republic, and offers insight into the nation's past. Dominating the site is the colossal bronze equestrian statue of Jan Žižka, one of the largest of its kind in the world.
