Getting there

Public Transport

The easiest way to reach Waldstein Garden is by taking the Metro Line A (Green Line) or tram to Malostranská station. From the station, it's a short 2-minute walk to the garden. Upon exiting the station, turn left, then immediately right; the entrance will be just ahead. A 30-minute ticket costs 30 CZK, and a 90-minute ticket costs 40 CZK. Alternatively, a 24-hour pass is available for 120 CZK.

Walking

If you are coming from Prague Castle, walk down towards Malá Strana. The garden is located just below the castle, a few minutes' walk away. Alternatively, if you are coming from Old Town, cross the Charles Bridge and continue towards Malá Strana. The garden is a short walk from the bridge. Look for the inconspicuous entrance on Letenská Street or near the Malostranská metro station. Entry to the garden is free.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Prague. A short taxi ride from the city center to Waldstein Garden will typically cost between 150-200 CZK. Ensure the taxi uses a meter. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Liftago are also available. The base fare for a taxi is around 60 CZK, with a per-kilometer rate of approximately 36 CZK. Be aware that electric taxis in the city center may have slightly higher rates.

Overview

The Waldstein Garden, or Valdštejnská zahrada in Czech, offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Prague's Malá Strana (Lesser Town). This meticulously designed early Baroque garden, established between 1623 and 1629, is part of the Wallenstein Palace complex, which today houses the Czech Senate. Created by Albrecht von Wallenstein, it was intended to rival Prague Castle in grandeur.The garden features geometrically arranged lawns, elegant flower beds, and a series of ornamental fountains and statues. The statues seen today are replicas of the originals, which were taken by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War; the originals are now in Sweden. Key features include the Sala Terrena, an open gallery adorned with frescoes depicting scenes from the Trojan War, and an artificial grotto wall with hidden faces and figures carved into the stone.Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere, observe colorful carp and ducks in the central pond, and admire peacocks roaming freely. The garden also hosts cultural events, including open-air concerts and theatrical performances, especially during the summer months. The Wallenstein Garden provides a unique blend of historical significance, artistic elements, and natural beauty, making it a worthwhile destination for those exploring Prague.
