Fenwick Island State Park: A Coastal Escape

Escape to Delaware's tranquil coast at Fenwick Island State Park: pristine beaches, calm bay waters, and natural beauty await.

4.7

Fenwick Island State Park is a coastal haven located on a narrow barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Little Assawoman Bay. Originally part of Delaware Seashore State Park, it became its own entity in 1981. The park boasts three miles of beautiful beaches, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling resort towns nearby. Visitors can swim and sunbathe on the sandy beaches, with lifeguards patrolling during the summer months. The park is also a popular spot for surf fishing, with designated dune crossings for vehicles with surf fishing permits. Anglers need a fishing license from DNREC's Division of Fish and Wildlife when fishing in tidal waters. Beyond the beach, the calm waters of Little Assawoman Bay are ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing. The park's Assawoman Recreation Area provides easy access for launching kayaks and other small watercraft. Nature enthusiasts can explore the park's diverse ecosystem, observing ghost crabs and other wildlife. Fenwick Island State Park also has historical significance. It was once home to the Fenwick Island Life-Saving Station, which aided maritime travelers in distress. During World War II, the park was part of the coastal defense system, and a fire control tower from that era still stands at the northern end of the park. The park provides amenities such as a bathhouse with showers and changing rooms, a snack bar, and beach equipment rentals. Beach wheelchairs are available from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
