Getting There

  • Walking

    From Sunset Beach, the World War II Lookout Tower is a short walk. Head east along Sunset Boulevard, and you'll see the tower on your left. The entrance is accessible via a boardwalk that crosses the dunes. There is no fee for walking.

  • Public Transport

    The NJ Transit Bus #313 stops at the Cape May Terminal. From there, it's approximately a 1.5-mile walk to the World War II Lookout Tower. Head north on the Washington Street Mall, turn left onto Ocean Avenue, and then left again onto Sunset Boulevard. The tower will be on your right at 536 Sunset Blvd. A one-way bus fare costs around $1.60.

  • Driving

    From Cape May, head south on US-9 S. Merge onto Garden State Pkwy S and continue to Exit 0 for Cape May. Follow signs for Cape May and merge onto NJ-109 S. Continue straight until you reach Sunset Blvd. Turn left onto Sunset Blvd, and the World War II Lookout Tower will be on your right at 536 Sunset Blvd. There is a large free parking lot across the street from the Tower.

Located on Sunset Boulevard in Lower Township, the World War II Lookout Tower, also known as Fire Control Tower No. 23, is the last freestanding World War II tower in New Jersey. Constructed in 1942 in just weeks, the tower was a key component of the Harbor Defense of the Delaware system, known as Fort Miles. This network of fire control towers and gun batteries protected a large territory. Inside the 71-foot tall tower, a staircase leads to the sixth-floor spotting gallery. Along the way, exhibits and interpretive panels detail the tower's history and function. The second floor features changing exhibits, while the Wall of Honor pays tribute to local veterans who served during World War II. Over 160 veterans' photos are on display. An interpreter at the top explains the equipment used and the role of those who manned the tower during the war. From the spotting gallery, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Sunset Beach and the surrounding area. At the rear of the tower, the All Veterans Memorial features an eternal flame sculpture. The tower is accessible via a boardwalk that crosses environmentally sensitive dunes. The lower floor is also accessible and features a small shop with souvenirs.
