The preserve is characterized by its sprawling wetlands, dense woodlands, and placid millponds, providing a sanctuary for both migratory birds and local fauna. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails that wind through scenic vistas, offering opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and quiet reflection. Abbott's Mill Nature Center, a 376-acre part of the Milford Millponds Nature Preserve, features hiking trails through lush deciduous and Atlantic White Cedar woodlands. The preserve's history is intertwined with Abbott's Mill, which dates back to 1795 when Nathan Willey contracted to purchase the land. By 1802, Willey had erected a grist mill on the site, and it changed hands several times before Ainsworth Abbott purchased it in 1919. The mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, with additional property added in 1979. Today, the Delaware Nature Society operates Abbott's Mill Nature Center, offering programs and activities to promote understanding and appreciation of the natural environment.
