Discover more about Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse

The Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse stands as a stoic sentinel, marking the entrance to the Delaware Bay and a haven for ships seeking shelter from the Atlantic's fury. Located offshore at the end of the Harbor of Refuge breakwater, about 1.25 miles north of the Delaware Breakwater, this lighthouse has a rich history of guiding vessels through treacherous waters. The original breakwater was authorized in 1825 to create a safe harbor near Cape Henlopen. By 1901, a second breakwater was completed to accommodate the increasing size of ships. A temporary light was established in 1902, replaced in 1908 by a three-story wooden lighthouse. Storms took their toll, and the current lighthouse, a 76-foot tall white conical cast iron tower with a black lantern room, was completed in 1926. The lighthouse is owned by the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation, who have been working to restore and preserve this important maritime landmark. While public tours have been suspended due to safety concerns regarding the breakwater's condition, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, with the U.S. Coast Guard maintaining its beacon, fog signal, and solar panels. Visible from Cape Henlopen State Park and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse is a reminder of the region's maritime past and the importance of safe navigation. Although climbing the lighthouse is currently not possible, keep an eye out for opportunities to spot dolphins dancing in the waves around the lighthouse. The Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation offers sunset cruises that pass by the lighthouse, allowing visitors to appreciate this historic structure from the water.
