Discover more about Abbey Mill

Klostermølle, situated on the western end of Mossø lake in the Skanderborg area, is a captivating destination where the echoes of history resonate amidst stunning natural surroundings. This site, whose name translates to "Abbey Mill," boasts a rich and varied past, evolving from a medieval Benedictine monastery to a bustling paper mill, and finally transforming into the nature center and recreational area it is today. Originally, Klostermølle served as a watermill for the nearby Voer Abbey, a role it maintained for centuries. Following the Protestant Reformation in 1536, the mill continued its function as a grain mill. However, in 1872, a significant change occurred when the mill was converted into a sawmill and cardboard factory. This industrial endeavor harnessed the power of the Gudenå River to drive its machinery, producing paper pulp and cardboard that were then transported across Mossø by steamboat to the railway station in Alken. The factory operated until 1973, when a devastating fire brought an end to production. The Danish Forest and Nature Agency subsequently acquired the site, embarking on a mission to conserve the natural environment surrounding Mossø and Vissing Abbey. Today, Klostermølle stands as a testament to this commitment, serving as both a nature center and the headquarters for the Danish youth organization, Nature and Youth (Natur & Ungdom). Visitors to Klostermølle can explore the well-preserved buildings, which offer a glimpse into the site's industrial past. The drying shed, a remarkable structure recognized as Denmark's longest wooden building, now features a birdwatching tower at its northern end, providing panoramic views of Klosterkær and Mossø. Inside one of the buildings, a small exhibition recounts the history of Klostermølle, complete with sounds from its days as a working mill. Klostermølle is also a popular starting point for canoe trips on the Gudenå River, with many rental locations offering canoe pickup services. The area is particularly renowned for the stretch of the Gudenå between Tørring and Klostermølle, considered by many to be the river's most scenic section. This part of the river is one-way for canoeists, adding to the unique experience. For those seeking breathtaking views, Klostermølle serves as the base for exploring Sukkertoppen (the Sugar Top), one of Denmark's most stunning viewpoints. Several trails lead from Klostermølle to the summit of this steep hill, which rises 108 meters above sea level, offering unparalleled vistas of Mossø, Klosterkær, Salten Langsø, and the forests and hills surrounding Himmelbjerget. The walk to the top is approximately 500 meters from the parking lot at Klostermølle, and visitors can also stroll along the 1.3-kilometer-long Klosterkanal (monastery canal). The area surrounding Klostermølle is rich in natural beauty, with diverse landscapes encompassing rivers, marshlands, lakes, and forests. This variety attracts a wide array of bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The site is accessible by foot, bicycle, or car, with parking available near the buildings. Klostermølle is open to the public at all times, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in its history and nature at their leisure. Whether you're interested in history, nature, or outdoor activities, Klostermølle offers a compelling experience. From exploring the historic buildings and learning about the site's past to hiking to panoramic viewpoints and paddling along the Gudenå River, Klostermølle provides a memorable journey through Denmark's cultural and natural heritage. The combination of historical significance, scenic beauty, and recreational opportunities makes Klostermølle a must-visit destination in the Danish Lake District.
