Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, located in Cabrits National Park on a scenic peninsula north of Portsmouth, is Dominica's most important historical site. Constructed by the British in 1765, it served as a key defense in the Lesser Antilles, primarily against French invasions. The French expanded the fort during their occupation from 1778 to 1784. The fort's Georgian architecture, designed by British Royal Engineers Fraser and Bruce, utilized the natural defenses of a volcanic crater. It housed up to 600 soldiers and included a main fort, gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, storehouses, bakeries, a forge, barracks, and officer's quarters. Fort Shirley is also known for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment. African slave soldiers took over the garrison for three days, protesting poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery. This revolt contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. The fort was abandoned in 1854 and remained largely untouched until restoration efforts began in 1982 under Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, climb the walls, and imagine life in this 18th-century fortress. The restored Officer's Quarters now hosts events like weddings and the annual Dominica Jazz n' Creole Festival.
