Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, is a testament to the island's rich and complex history. Constructed by the British starting in 1765, the fort was a key defensive structure in the Lesser Antilles, designed to protect the northern coast of Dominica from invasions, especially from the French. The fort is named for Sir Thomas Shirley, Governor of the Leeward Islands at the time. Extended by the French during their occupation from 1778 to 1784, Fort Shirley's Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, made the most of the natural defenses provided by the volcanic crater in which it was built. The fort housed up to 600 soldiers and included gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, storehouses, bakeries, a forge, barracks, and officer's quarters. Fort Shirley is also notable for the 1802 rebellion of slave soldiers from the 8th West India Regiment. This revolt, protesting poor conditions and fear of being sold back into slavery, contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, restoration efforts began in 1982, and today, much of the fort is intact or has been rebuilt. Visitors can explore the ruins, climb the walls, and imagine life in this strategic outpost. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and is now used for events. The fort's location within Cabrits National Park, established in 1986, allows visitors to combine history with nature, enjoying hiking, birdwatching, and panoramic views.
