The Roseau Cathedral Chapel, or the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven, is a significant landmark in the heart of Roseau, Dominica. Its history stretches back to 1730 when Father Guillaume Martel, a Dominican friar, established a modest wooden church for French settlers. This humble beginning evolved into the architectural gem seen today, reflecting Dominica's complex history and vibrant culture.Over the centuries, the church underwent several transformations. Construction of a more substantial structure began in 1799, but it took four decades to complete. The abolition of slavery in 1834 brought an influx of new worshippers, necessitating further expansion. Two side aisles were built in stone, supported by huge pillars of native iron-wood brought from Colihaut. In 1850, Roseau was established as a diocese, with Bishop Michael Monaghan as its first bishop. The cathedral's steeple was added in 1855, followed by a wooden ceiling in 1865 crafted from simaruba trees by the Kalinago people. A stone pulpit, carved by prisoners from Devil's Island, was erected during this period. The cathedral's spire was completed in 1916, and the building was formally consecrated in 1925.The cathedral has weathered numerous natural disasters, including Hurricane David in 1979, which led to extensive restoration work. The roof was replaced with eternity tiles, and the side steeples were topped with concrete domes. Today, the Roseau Cathedral Chapel stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Dominican people and their unwavering faith. Its Gothic Romanesque Revival architecture, constructed from volcanic stone, showcases European creolisation influence in Dominica.
