The base of the Ferdinand De Lesseps statue is located at the end of Palestine Road in Port Said, Egypt. It commemorates Ferdinand de Lesseps, the French diplomat and engineer behind the Suez Canal. The statue, crafted by French artist Emmanuel Frémiet, was made of iron and bronze and stood at the entrance of Port Said's corniche from 1899 to 1956. In 1956, during the Suez Crisis, Egyptian revolutionists removed the statue. The statue has been restored and is currently located in a shipyard in Port Fouad. There have been debates about whether to return the statue to its original location. Port Said was established in 1859 during the construction of the Suez Canal and has a rich maritime history. The city attracted people from France, Greece, and Italy, remnants of which can be seen in its architecture and multilingual dialect.
