Discover more about Witches Finger Trail

The Witches Finger Trail presents a relatively easy hike to one of the Faroe Islands' most distinctive landmarks: Trøllkonufingur (the Witch's Finger). Located near the village of Sandavágur on Vágar island, this trail offers not only breathtaking views but also a glimpse into the rich folklore of the Faroes. The trail itself is accessible to hikers of various skill levels, making it a popular choice for both seasoned adventurers and those seeking a leisurely stroll. As you traverse the path, you'll be treated to panoramic vistas of dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, and the vast North Atlantic Ocean. The sound of crashing waves and the crisp, clean air add to the tranquil atmosphere. Trøllkonufingur, the highlight of the hike, is a free-standing rock formation that soars 313 meters (1027 feet) above sea level. Legend has it that a witch, intending to cast the Faroe Islands north towards Iceland, was turned to stone by the rising sun. She fell into the water, leaving only her pointy finger and the back of her head (now the island of Koltur) visible. Sandavágur, the village near the trail, is worth exploring. Its red-roofed church, dating back to the 19th century, houses a Viking Age runestone. The village also features the statue Seyðamaðurin á Sondum, a monument to a local shepherd from Faroese folklore.
