Getting There

  • Driving

    From Vágar Airport, drive west on Route 22 towards Sørvágur. In Sørvágur, follow Route 45 towards Bøur and Gásadalur. Continue through the one-lane Gásadalstunnilin tunnel. Be aware of the right-of-way rules indicated by red and black arrows at the tunnel entrance. Parking is free but can be limited near the village. The tunnel toll for the Vágar Tunnel (connecting Streymoy and Vágar) is 100 DKK, covering both outward and return journeys. There are no tolls for the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel. Parking is free of charge.

  • Public Transport

    From Tórshavn or Vágar Airport, take bus route 300 to Sørvágur. From Sørvágur, transfer to bus route 350, which will take you directly to Gásadalur. The bus journey from Sørvágur to Gásadalur takes approximately 7 minutes. A multi-day travel card for the Faroe Islands public transport system costs 500 DKK for four days.

  • Walking

    For a scenic approach, hike the old postal route from Bøur to Gásadalur. The trailhead is 2.8 km northwest of Bøur village. The hike is 3.5 km and takes about 2.5 hours, with a maximum height of 434m. Be prepared for steep and challenging sections. There are no costs associated with hiking this route.

Gasadalur, located on the western side of Vágar Island in the Faroe Islands, offers a stunning panorama, particularly towards the isle of Mykines. Until 2004, Gasadalur was the only village in the Faroes without a road connection, making it one of the most isolated settlements. The only access was by boat, weather permitting, or a strenuous hike over the high mountains. In 2004, the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel was constructed, connecting the village to the rest of Vágar. The village is surrounded by some of the highest mountains on Vágar, with Árnafjall towering to 722 meters to the north and Eysturtindur reaching 715 meters to the east. The famous Múlafossur Waterfall is easily accessible from the village, a short walk offering extraordinary scenery as the water plunges into the North Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can explore the village's traditional Faroese architecture, with quaint houses and a peaceful atmosphere. A café and souvenir shop provide local food and crafts. Hiking around Gasadalur offers spectacular views, and during the summer months, puffins can be spotted in the area.
