Discover more about Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Nestled in the foothills of the Sabeto Range, a short drive north of Nadi, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant offers a tranquil escape into Fiji's natural splendor. Originally established in 1977 by the late Raymond Burr, famed for his roles in Perry Mason and Ironside, the garden began as his private orchid collection. Burr's passion for orchids and Fiji transformed this space into a 20-hectare (50-acre) haven, now open for all to enjoy. The garden boasts over 2,000 varieties of orchids and Cattleya hybrids, a vibrant display of color and delicate beauty. Wander through landscaped lawns, past serene lily ponds with trickling fountains, and along canopy-covered boardwalks that wind through a native rainforest. The "jungle walk" provides an immersive experience, allowing visitors to witness the raw beauty of the Fijian jungle with its lush canopy and exotic bird calls. More than just orchids, the garden features a diverse collection of Fiji's native plants. The garden is named after the Sleeping Giant mountain that towers over it, which got its name from a local legend about a giant who ate so many locals that he fell into a deep sleep. The dramatic landscape was once a retreat for Burr, who found solace in the calm and beauty of the orchid sanctuary he created. Today, visitors can explore Raymond Burr’s holiday shack, which contains photographs and some of his belongings. The Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a testament to Burr's love for Fiji and his dedication to preserving its natural beauty.
