Auttiköngäs: A Lapland Waterfall and Nature Trail

Auttiköngäs, located approximately 80 km from Rovaniemi, is a natural wonderland offering a diverse landscape and a glimpse into Lapland's history. The area's main attraction is the impressive Auttiköngäs waterfall, which plunges into a rugged gorge carved by the Auttijoki River. The Auttiköngäs Nature Trail, a 3.5 km circular route, takes visitors through old-growth forests, past the waterfall, and up to the Könkäänvaara Hill, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of the taiga. The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it suitable for families and hikers of various skill levels. Along the way, information boards provide insights into the area's natural and cultural history. Historically, Auttiköngäs was an important site for log floating, with logs transported down the Auttijoki River to the mills in Kemi. The remnants of a log-floating flume and dam can still be seen near the waterfall, offering a glimpse into this bygone era. The area also bears traces of wartime activity, with remnants of German fortifications from the Continuation War. Today, Auttiköngäs is a protected area, part of an old-growth forest conservation program and the Natura 2000 network.
