Travel Guide to Kanjonin Kurkkaus

Getting There

• Car

  Start from Ruka center and head southeast on Rukatunturintie road. Continue for about 30 km until you reach the junction with Route 5. Turn left onto Route 5 and drive for approximately 7 km. Look for signs directing you to Salla. You will eventually reach Salla, where you should follow the signs to Oulanka National Park. Continue driving for another 8 km until you reach the parking area for Kanjonin Kurkkaus. Note that parking may have a fee, so be prepared with some cash or a card.

• Public Transportation

  From Ruka, take the local bus service towards Salla. Buses typically operate a few times a day, so check the schedule in advance. The bus ride will take about 45 minutes. Get off at the Salla bus station. From there, you may need to arrange for a taxi or a rideshare service to reach the Kanjonin Kurkkaus trailhead, which is about 8 km away. Taxi fares may vary, so confirm the cost with the driver before starting your journey.

• Biking

  If you are feeling adventurous, you can rent a bike in Ruka and cycle to Kanjonin Kurkkaus. Start from Ruka and follow the same route as for the car, heading southeast on Rukatunturintie. Be prepared for a ride of about 30 km to the junction with Route 5, then another 7 km on Route 5. After this, you will take a scenic route towards Oulanka National Park, which will be about 8 km from Salla. Make sure to check the weather and bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.
