    Colleville-sur-Mer, located in the Calvados department of Normandy, is a commune with a population of just over 200. Its history stretches back to the Middle Ages, originally a farm owned by a Scandinavian settler named Koli. However, it is most renowned for its pivotal role during the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, when the beach adjacent to the village was designated Omaha Beach, one of the main landing sites.Today, Colleville-sur-Mer is a place of remembrance and reflection. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, built above Omaha Beach, is a moving tribute to the American soldiers who perished during the Battle of Normandy. The cemetery, which opened in 1956, contains the graves of 9,387 American soldiers and is maintained by the U.S. government. Visitors can also explore the Overlord Museum, which offers further insight into the events of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.While the village was almost completely destroyed during the war, it was rebuilt between 1946 and 1951.
