Maison du Peuple: A Bastion of Labor History

The Maison du Peuple, located at 24 Rue Charles Michels in Limoges, stands as a testament to the city's rich labor history and architectural heritage. Constructed in 1936, this building was designed to provide a central location for trade unions, which had previously been scattered throughout the city. The Maison du Peuple replaced an earlier, smaller Bourse du Travail (Labor Exchange) established in 1896.The decision to construct the Maison du Peuple came from the socialist municipality of Léon Betoulle in the 1930s. The city's chief architect, Léon Faure, was tasked with designing the building. The inauguration of the Maison du Peuple on June 7, 1936, coincided with the signing of the Matignon Agreements by the Front Populaire, a symbolic moment in French labor history.The building's architecture is notable for its Art Deco style, contrasting with the 18th-century buildings along Rue Charles Michels. The facade combines stone foundations with concrete elevations and features large windows. Inside, the Maison du Peuple is adorned with artistic elements that pay homage to workers and trade unionism, including a fresco by Pierre Parot and stained glass by Francis Chigot.Today, the Maison du Peuple continues to house several trade unions and serves as a venue for various community events. It was labeled a 20th-century heritage site in 2002, and its interior decorations were listed as historical monuments in 2014.
