Discover more about Château d'Azay-le-Rideau

Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, located in the Loire Valley, is a stunning example of French Renaissance architecture. Constructed between 1518 and 1527 on an island in the Indre River, the château appears to float on the water, creating a magical and unforgettable scene. The château's history began in the 12th century when a fortress was built to protect the road between Tours and Chinon. However, the current château was built under the patronage of François I by Gilles Berthelot, his treasurer, and his wife, Philippe Lesbahy. The design reflects a blend of French and Italian styles, showcasing the evolving architectural tastes of the time. Over the centuries, the château has passed through several hands, each leaving their mark on its appearance and interiors. In the 19th century, the Biencourt family extensively restored the château, adding Neo-Renaissance elements. Today, the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau is a national monument, managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, and welcomes visitors from around the world. A recent restoration (2015-2017) has returned the château to its former glory. Visitors can explore the château's interior, admiring its Renaissance staircase, elegant salons, and period furnishings. The surrounding park offers a tranquil setting for a leisurely stroll, with picturesque views of the château and the Indre River.
