Discover more about Church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont

Located on Place Sainte-Geneviève in the 5th arrondissement, the Church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont stands as a testament to centuries of Parisian history and architectural evolution. Its construction, spanning from 1492 to 1626, resulted in a fascinating fusion of Gothic, Flamboyant Gothic, and Renaissance styles. The church's origins are linked to the Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, founded by King Clovis in the 6th century. As the parish grew, the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont was built adjacent to the abbey. The abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, leaving Saint-Étienne-du-Mont standing. The facade features three Renaissance pediments and a 16th-century belfry. Inside, the church boasts impressive dimensions, intricate carvings, and 16th and 17th-century stained-glass windows. One of the church's most remarkable features is its rood screen (jubé), a decorative partition separating the nave from the choir. Saint-Étienne-du-Mont is the only church in Paris to still possess its rood screen. The church is also home to the shrine of Sainte-Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris, whose relics are enshrined in a silver and gold reliquary. The philosopher Blaise Pascal and playwright Jean Racine are also buried within its walls.
