Discover more about Collège des Bernardins

Located in the heart of Paris’s 5th arrondissement, the Collège des Bernardins is a stunning example of 13th-century Cistercian architecture. Founded by Étienne de Lexington, the Abbot of Clairvaux, in 1248, it served as a place of study and residence for Cistercian monks attending the University of Paris. The college played a significant role in the intellectual revolution of the Middle Ages, providing a space for theological study and intellectual discourse. Throughout its history, the Collège des Bernardins has undergone numerous transformations. After the French Revolution, it was repurposed as a prison, a salt warehouse, and even a fire station. In 2001, the Diocese of Paris acquired the building and initiated a comprehensive restoration project, completed in 2008. The renovation, led by architects Hervé Baptiste and Jean-Michel Wilmotte, preserved the building's historical integrity while incorporating contemporary spaces for modern use. Today, the Collège des Bernardins is a vibrant cultural center that hosts a variety of events, including conferences, exhibitions, concerts, and workshops. Visitors can explore the stunning nave, the former sacristy, and other architectural marvels, such as a 13th-century Cistercian rose window and the remains of the Bièvre River's diversion wall. The college also houses a theological and biblical studies center, continuing its mission of intellectual and spiritual enrichment. The building stands as one of the largest medieval buildings in Paris.
