Discover more about Historical Library of the City of Paris

The Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris (BHVP) is a specialized public library dedicated to the captivating history of Paris and the surrounding Île-de-France region. Housed in the Hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon since 1969, at 24 rue Pavée in the Marais district (4th arrondissement), the library is a treasure trove for researchers, students, and anyone with a passion for Parisian history. The library's collection comprises over a million documents, offering insights into the city's topographic, urban, political, religious, social, and cultural evolution. Among its holdings are approximately one million books and booklets, 21,000 manuscripts, as well as plans, maps, and photographs. These materials cover a wide range of aspects of Paris and the Île-de-France region from the 16th century to the present. The BHVP also boasts significant collections related to theater, literature, and even feminism. The library's origins trace back to Jules Cousin, who started the collection in 1872 after a fire destroyed the original library at the Hôtel de Ville during the Paris Commune. The BHVP first opened in the Hôtel Carnavalet. As the collection grew, it moved to a neighboring building and then, in 1969, to its current location in the Hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon. The Hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon itself has a rich history. The original plan of the hotel is attributed to the renowned architect Philibert de l'Orme. Antoine Moriau, an attorney and prosecutor for the city of Paris, rented the Hotel Lamoignon to house his vast collection of books and documents related to the city. Before his death, he bequeathed his collection to the City of Paris, with the condition that it be made into a public library. The library was relocated to its original home in 1969 and opened to the public. Visitors can explore the library's reading rooms, attend exhibitions, and delve into the extensive archives. The BHVP is part of the network of Paris municipal libraries and also houses the city's historical research service.
