The National Museum of Arts, Rites and Traditions of Gabon (MNARTG) stands as the country's premier museum, offering a deep dive into the nation's cultural and artistic heritage. Located in the heart of Libreville at 51 avenue Augustin Boumah, it faces the Chamber of Commerce. The museum boasts a collection of approximately 2,500 works and objects of traditional Gabonese art, collected since 1954. The museum's collection is divided into 16 categories, including basketry, kitchen utensils, metallurgy, musical instruments, statuettes, Mbigou stones, archeology, reliquaries, masks, canes, hunting, dowry currency, pottery, fishing, ornaments and miscellaneous items. The museum also has a documentary collection of 2,627 books and a sound and audiovisual collection of 1,114 recordings in four aesthetic fields: stories, dances, songs and instruments. Originally established in 1963 in the former residence of Herbert Pepper, the museum moved to its current, larger location in 2019. The museum is more than just a repository of art; it's a space for cultural exchange and education, hosting regular workshops, cultural performances, and exhibitions.
