Mgvimevi Convent, located in the Imereti region near Chiatura, is a remarkable testament to Georgia's cultural and religious history. The name 'Mgvimevi' itself derives from the Georgian word for 'cave,' aptly describing the convent's unique setting. Founded in the 13th century during the reign of Queen Tamar, the complex is partially carved into a towering cliff, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings.The convent features a two-nave basilica dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, showcasing traditional Georgian ornamentation. Inside, fragments of frescoes narrate tales of faith and history. A small hall church dedicated to St. Catherine incorporates natural rock formations into its ceiling and west wall, adding to the site's unique character.
