Chronicles of Georgia: Tbilisi's Stone Giants
Explore Georgia's history etched in stone at the Chronicles of Georgia, a monumental tribute offering panoramic views of Tbilisi.
The Chronicles of Georgia, sometimes called the 'Georgian Stonehenge,' is a monumental sculpture complex offering a unique perspective on Georgian history and culture. Located on Keeni Hill, near the Tbilisi Sea, the site provides panoramic views of Tbilisi and its surroundings. Created by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, construction began in 1985 to commemorate 3,000 years of Georgian statehood and 2,000 years of Christianity in the country. The monument features 16 towering pillars, each between 30 and 35 meters tall, adorned with intricate carvings. The upper sections of the pillars depict Georgian kings, queens, and heroes, while the lower sections portray scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. You'll also find the cross of St. Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century. Despite being partially incomplete due to funding issues after the Soviet Union collapse, the Chronicles of Georgia stands as a testament to Georgian national identity and pride. The site includes a small chapel, the Church of the Annunciation, adding to its spiritual significance. Visiting the Chronicles of Georgia offers a peaceful escape from the city, with views of Soviet-era architecture and the Tbilisi Sea. It's an ideal spot for photography and reflection, providing a glimpse into Georgia's rich past and artistic heritage.
