Discover more about Shumi Winery Kakheti

Nestled in the heart of Kakheti, Georgia's renowned wine region, Shumi Winery stands as a testament to the country's 8,000-year-old winemaking history. Established in 1997 in the historic village of Tsinandali, Shumi (meaning "the best wine" in ancient Georgian) is more than just a winery; it's a cultural and wine tourism complex dedicated to preserving and promoting Georgia's viticultural heritage. Shumi's commitment to quality and innovation is evident in its meticulous approach to winemaking. The winery cultivates over 300 hectares of vineyards across various microzones, focusing on pairing the right terroirs with indigenous grape varieties. These vineyards are located in some of Georgia's most important PDOs (Protected Designation of Origin), including Mukuzani, Napareuli, Kindzmarauli, and Tsinandali. Shumi was also the first in Georgia to adopt biodynamic and green harvesting methods, and to produce certified organic wines. Visitors to Shumi Winery can embark on a journey through the history of Georgian winemaking. The winery boasts the world's largest private collection of living vines, with over 2,000 varieties from 47 countries, including 33 previously unknown varieties. The First Wine Museum in Georgia showcases ancient wine artifacts and illustrates the evolution of Georgian winemaking techniques. Shumi produces a diverse range of wines, classified as Tsinandali, Napareuli, Mukuzani, Khvanchkara, Kinzmarauli, and Akhasheni. The winery combines traditional Georgian winemaking methods, such as aging wine in Qvevri (clay amphorae buried underground), with European techniques. This fusion results in wines that express the unique terroir, passion, and heritage of Georgia. Beyond wine production, Shumi offers a range of cultural experiences. Visitors can participate in traditional activities such as grape harvesting, bread baking, and cooking national dishes. The winery's cultural complex also features a decorative garden with sculptures by Georgian and international artists.
