Discover more about Baltic Sea watchtower, Börgerende

The Baltic Sea watchtower (Ostsee-Grenzturm) in Börgerende stands as a stark reminder of Germany's divided past. Erected during the Cold War, it was one of 27 such towers used by the East German Border Troops to monitor the Baltic Sea coastline. Today, only two remain, the other being in Kühlungsborn, making the Börgerende tower a significant historical landmark. The BT 11 type tower was equipped with high-magnification telescopes, enabling a four-man crew to observe the sea up to 12 nautical miles away. Their mission was to prevent Republikflucht – escape attempts from East Germany. The tower's elevated position and powerful searchlights ensured comprehensive surveillance. After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, most border installations were dismantled. However, the Börgerende watchtower was preserved as a heritage monument. Visitors can now explore the tower, learn about its history, and appreciate the breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea. The surrounding area features well-maintained pathways for leisurely walks along the beach.
