Assmannshäuser Höllenberg: A Vineyard of Distinction
Discover Rheinstein Castle: A romantic escape into medieval history with breathtaking Rhine River views, a charming chapel, and exquisite gardens, nestled in the heart of the Rhine Valley.
Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Rhine, Rheinstein Castle is a captivating blend of medieval history and 19th-century Romanticism. Originally built in the 14th century as a customs fortress, it fell into disrepair before being lovingly restored by Prince Frederick of Prussia in the 1820s. Today, visitors can explore its charming courtyard with a 500-year-old grapevine, descend into the neo-Gothic chapel and royal crypt, and marvel at the stained glass windows and period furnishings within the castle walls. With its stunning views of the Rhine Valley, Rheinstein Castle offers a glimpse into both the strategic importance of the region and the romantic ideals that shaped its modern identity. The castle also features a restaurant with a terrace and overnight accommodations.

Driving
If arriving by car, follow Route B9 along the Rhine River. Free parking is available in designated lots (Parkplatz Rheinstein) at the base of the castle, but spaces are limited and a 2-hour time limit may be enforced during peak season. From the parking area, a paved, switchback path leads uphill to the castle entrance (approximately a 5-10 minute walk). Be aware that the path is steep in places. Parking is free for up to two hours with a blue parking disc.
Public Transport
The nearest train station is Trechtingshausen. From the station, it's approximately a 25-30 minute walk to Rheinstein Castle. Follow the road along the Rhine River (Route B9) south towards the castle. Alternatively, from Trechtingshausen Bahnhof, take the 691 bus to Trechtingshausen, Morgenbacht, and then walk to the castle. A taxi from Bingen railway station will cost around €20.
