Discover more about Gibraltar Rock

Rising dramatically from the sea, Gibraltar Rock is a monolithic limestone promontory that has been a strategic stronghold for centuries. Known in ancient times as Mons Calpe, one of the Pillars of Hercules, it marked the edge of the known world. Today, it offers visitors a unique blend of history, stunning views, and fascinating wildlife. The Rock's history is rich and layered. Initially settled by the Moors in 711 AD, it was named Jebel Tariq (Mount Tariq) after their leader, Tariq ibn Ziyad. Over the centuries, it was contested by various powers before becoming a British territory in 1713. The Rock played a crucial role in both World War I and World War II, with extensive tunnels built within it.Today, most of the upper area of the Rock is a nature reserve, home to around 300 Barbary macaques, also known as Barbary apes. These primates are a major draw for tourists. Visitors can also explore St. Michael's Cave, a network of limestone caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and the Great Siege Tunnels, hewn out of the rock during the Great Siege of Gibraltar in the late 18th century. The Skywalk, a glass platform, offers panoramic views. From the summit, one can see the African coastline, the meeting of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and the Spanish Costa del Sol. Gibraltar Rock is more than just a landmark; it's a living museum and a natural wonder.
