Discover more about Mausoleo Romano

The Mausoleo Romano, situated in the heart of Estepona, is a fascinating testament to the Roman presence in the region. Dating back to the late 4th century AD, this well-preserved mausoleum provides insight into the funerary practices and architectural styles of the Roman Empire. The site is located below the Plaza del Reloj on Calle Villa. Excavations have revealed the foundations of the Roman building, including a subterranean crypt with masonry walls and a pebble floor. The upper room, now lost, was likely a funeral chapel. Fragments of marble slabs, mosaic pieces, and decorative elements recovered during excavations hint at the mausoleum's original grandeur. These materials originated from various quarries around the Mediterranean. It's believed the mausoleum was constructed by a wealthy family who owned a large villa to the west. Evidence of the villa, including walls, floors, salting basins, and amphora kilns used for exporting salted fish, have also been discovered nearby. The site was abandoned and looted in the 6th century AD and further damaged during the Moorish occupation in the 13th century. An interesting collection of Islamic pottery was found here and is now exhibited in the Estepona Archaeological Museum. While its primary function was likely a funerary monument, another theory suggests the 12-meter tall, two-story tower may have served as a Roman lighthouse to protect fishing activities. Regardless, the Mausoleo Romano stands as a significant historical site, offering visitors a tangible connection to Estepona's ancient past.
