Discover more about North Front Cemetery

North Front Cemetery, also known as the Garrison Cemetery, is a significant historical site in Gibraltar, located near the airport and harbor. Established in 1756, it is Gibraltar's only active cemetery and an important military burial ground. The cemetery provides a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to explore well-preserved grounds adorned with mature trees, lush greenery and impressive monuments. The cemetery holds the remains of servicemen who died in the Military Hospital or on ships passing by Gibraltar during the World Wars. The war graves from 1914-1918 are spread throughout the cemetery. The majority of those who died in Gibraltar during the 1939-1945 War are buried in two adjacent plots at the northern end. Due to airport safety regulations at the time, headstones near the northern boundary were laid flat. The Gibraltar Memorial, located west of the cemetery near the sea, commemorates soldiers from the 1914-1918 War and airmen/soldiers from the 1939-45 War who were buried at sea. Managed by a Superintendent and a dedicated team, the cemetery is open to the public daily, inviting quiet reflection and remembrance. It serves as an educational site, offering insights into the military heritage and personal stories of bravery and sacrifice.
