Nestled on Windmill Hill within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Jews’ Gate Cemetery offers a serene escape and a glimpse into Gibraltar's Jewish history. The cemetery, also known as Windmill Hill Cemetery, holds the earliest known Jewish burials in Gibraltar, dating back to 1746. It remained in use until 1848 and is the burial site of many of Gibraltar's Chief Rabbis and other prominent members of the community. The gravestones, primarily in the Sephardic style, are laid out horizontally, and a raised pathway guides visitors through the site. While some inscriptions have faded due to exposure to the elements, the best-preserved stones were once covered in mud and peat. The cemetery's vegetation is intentionally left to grow during winter and spring to support the Barbary partridge's mating season, reflecting a unique blend of historical preservation and ecological awareness. The cemetery's origins remain somewhat mysterious, with theories suggesting its location was chosen to avoid political complications with Spain, which historically expelled Jews. Today, Jews’ Gate Cemetery is protected by Gibraltar law and was rededicated in 2015 after extensive restoration. Visitors can explore the tranquil grounds, appreciate the intricate headstones, and reflect on the stories of resilience and faith embodied within this historical landmark.
