Discover more about Kucuk Hasan Mosque

The Küçük Hasan Mosque, or Yali Tzami, stands proudly in the heart of Chania's Old Venetian Harbor, a picturesque reminder of the island's Ottoman past. Constructed in 1649, it was commissioned by Küçük Hasan Pasha, the first Ottoman governor of Chania, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1645. The mosque was erected on the site of a pre-existing Christian temple. For nearly three centuries, the Küçük Hasan Mosque served as a vital place of worship for Chania's Muslim population. After the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey in 1923, the mosque ceased its religious functions. In 1939, its minaret was unfortunately demolished. Over the years, the building has been repurposed, serving as a storehouse, a folklore museum, and even a tourist information center. Today, it operates as an exhibition space managed by the municipality of Chania, hosting art shows and cultural events. The mosque's architecture is a beautiful example of Ottoman design. Its most prominent feature is the large dome, supported by four stone arches. Surrounding the main structure are smaller domes, adding to the building's unique aesthetic. The contrast of the red domes against the white-washed walls makes it a striking landmark. Its location offers stunning views of the harbor and the iconic Chania Lighthouse.
