The Sanctuary of Artemis Limnatidos, situated in the region of Artemisia on Mount Taygetos near modern Volymnos, holds historical importance as a border sanctuary between Messenia and Laconia. Its location, approximately six kilometers from present-day Artemisia, largely coincides with the chapel of Panagia Volimniotissa. Established by Octavian Augustus, the sanctuary's dedication stemmed from the Lacedaemonians' support for him against Mark Antony. Today, the site is recognized as an official archaeological area, and numerous ancient findings are showcased at the Archaeological Museum of Messenia in Kalamata. The sanctuary is identified as one of the most important border sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world. The sanctuary's Ionic temple, measuring 16.70x10.60m, featured two columns at the front. Within the temple's remains, a limestone pedestal marks the location of the worship statue, presumably depicting the goddess Artemis. Excavations have also uncovered the altar and a section of the enclosure. Artemis Limnatidos is believed to be associated with Laphria, an ancient pre-Hellenic deity of nature, life, and death.
