The Second Ancient Theatre of Larissa, or Β' Αρχαίο Θέατρο Λάρισας, is an ancient Greek theatre located in the city of Larissa, Greece. Constructed in the latter half of the 1st century BC, the theatre is situated on the southwestern slopes of the Pefkakia hill. This hill was partially leveled in the 1950s to make way for residential development, revealing the theatre during excavations for a new apartment complex in 1978.Archaeological evidence suggests the theatre's construction may be linked to the festival of Eleftheria, which included athletic, equestrian, theatrical, musical, and poetic performances. An inscription dedicated to Demeter and Kore indicates the presence of a temple dedicated to these goddesses at the site during classical antiquity. The theatre's design features a stage with three rooms and walls built with small, rough stones and mud. The seating area (koilon) is divided by fourteen staircases into thirteen sections, each containing two rows of seats made from greyish-white marble.In later centuries, the site underwent several transformations. During the Byzantine era, a church dedicated to Hagia Sophia or Agia Paraskevi was erected on the grounds. This was later replaced by the mosque of Hassan Bey during the Ottoman period. Today, the Second Ancient Theatre serves as a reminder of Larissa's layered history and cultural significance. Visitors can explore the partially excavated site and imagine the performances and ceremonies that once took place within its walls.
