Discover more about Holy Monastery of Saint Stephan

The Holy Monastery of Saint Stephen, also known as Agios Stefanos, is one of the six active monasteries in Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its stunning natural landscape and unique monastic communities. Unlike other monasteries in the area, St. Stephen's is easily accessible via a short stone bridge, making it an ideal destination for visitors of all ages and those with mobility issues. Originally founded in the 12th century by the hermit Jeremiah, the monastery has a rich history, with significant contributions from Hosios Anthony in the 15th century and Hosios Philotheos in the 16th century, who rebuilt the church of Saint Stephen. The monastery complex includes two cathedrals: the original 16th-century chapel, which suffered damage during World War II and the Greek Civil War, and the main 18th-century cathedral dedicated to Saint Charalambos, whose holy relics are housed within. The dining hall has been converted into a museum displaying a remarkable collection of manuscripts, icons, and sacred heirlooms. Since 1961, the monastery has been a convent, with a sisterhood known for their spiritual, charitable, and renovation work. Visitors can explore the monastery grounds, admire the intricate frescoes, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of this living monastic community. The monastery also offers panoramic views of the city of Kalabaka and the vast Thessalian valley.
