Discover more about Methana Volcano

Methana Volcano, located on the Methana peninsula in the northeastern Peloponnese, is a fascinating geological site and a rewarding hiking destination. The peninsula itself is a product of volcanic activity that began millions of years ago, with the Methana Volcano being one of its youngest features. Today, Methana is considered a dormant volcano, but it is still part of the Aegean volcanic arc, a chain of active volcanoes in the South Aegean Sea. The most recent eruption occurred in 230 BC, creating the lava dome near the village of Kameni Chora. The volcano is defined as active. The last eruptions took place in 1700 at a submarine volcano north of Kameni Chora. The main crater measures 50 meters deep and 100 meters in diameter. Hiking to the volcano's crater is a popular activity, with the trail starting in Kameni Chora. The climb is relatively easy, taking around 25 minutes to reach the rim. Along the way, hikers traverse a landscape of dark volcanic rocks, pine forests, and limestone formations. From the crater's edge, panoramic views of the Saronic islands and the surrounding peninsula unfold. The volcano's slopes also display ancient lava flows, offering a tangible connection to the region's volcanic past. While the summit itself may not have a spectacular viewpoint, the walk is beautiful.
