The Rethymnon Lighthouse, a prominent landmark in Rethymnon's Venetian harbor, boasts a rich and multifaceted history. Constructed in 1838 during the Egyptian occupation of Crete, it is the second-largest surviving Egyptian lighthouse on the island, following the one in Chania. This 9-meter-high structure may have replaced an older Venetian lighthouse, mirroring a similar transition in Chania's harbor. During the 1830s, Crete was under Egyptian rule as the Ottoman Turks gave the island to the Egyptians. The lighthouse was part of a broader modernization effort of Crete's infrastructure. In 1864, control of the lighthouse was transferred to the French Lighthouse Company. Today, while no longer operational, the lighthouse remains a significant cultural attraction, drawing locals and tourists alike, especially in the late afternoon. Walking
The Rethymnon Lighthouse is located at the end of the old pier in the Venetian Harbor, making it easily accessible on foot from most points in Rethymnon Town. From the Rethymnon Market (Agora), head south towards the Old Town and continue to the waterfront. Once you reach the promenade, turn right and walk along the water for 15-20 minutes. As you approach the Fortezza, the lighthouse will become visible at the end of the harbor. Follow the path around the Fortezza to reach the lighthouse. The walk is free, but the path can be uneven.
