Discover more about Askos Stone Park

Askos Stone Park, situated in the northern region of Zakynthos near Volimes, is a remarkable 124-acre reserve that combines elements of a wildlife sanctuary, forest preserve, natural zoo, agricultural research area, and archaeological site. Opened to the public in 2002, the park's name derives from the ancient stone constructions found throughout the area, including walls, pavements, stables, cellars, and rainwater collection basins carved into the rock around 600 years ago. Visitors can wander through the park and observe a diverse range of animals in their natural habitat. These include various bird species like hawks, doves, and peacocks, as well as mammals such as deer, rabbits, ponies, cows, horses, goats, sheep, and even raccoons from North America. The park is also home to turtles, squirrels, and chinchillas. Knowledgeable keepers and guides are available to assist visitors, offering opportunities to feed the animals and, at times, participate in activities like milking cows or collecting olives. The park boasts over 170,000 self-sown plants, bushes, and trees. Scientific organizations are welcome to conduct research within the park, which also cultivates fruit trees without chemical fertilizers. The fruits are used to produce traditional sweets. While a portion of the park remains a protected forest for the animals, the area open to visitors provides a fascinating glimpse into Zakynthos' natural and cultural heritage.
