Discover more about Grand Etang Lake

Grand Etang Lake, located in the heart of Grenada's Grand Etang National Park, is a mesmerizing natural wonder steeped in history and shrouded in local legend. Formed in the crater of a long-dormant volcano, the lake sits 530 meters (1,740 feet) above sea level and covers approximately 36 acres. The volcano itself has been inactive for around 12,000 years. The lake's serene, azure waters reflect the surrounding lush rainforest, creating a picturesque scene that draws nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Hiking trails wind around the lake and into the surrounding mountains, offering varying levels of challenge and stunning panoramic views. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including colorful tropical birds, lizards, frogs, Mona monkeys, and the Grenada Hook-billed Kite. Grand Etang's history extends back to the indigenous Carib people, who used the area as a sacred camp. Later, it played a role in the island's colonial past, with the British capturing a French stronghold near Mount Qua Qua in 1796. Today, the lake is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a chance to connect with nature and enjoy the tranquility of this unique volcanic landscape. Legend has it that a mermaid inhabits the lake's depths, luring unsuspecting men to their doom. The lake is also said to have uncharted geological networks and has been observed bubbling when the nearby Kick 'em Jenny submarine volcano is active.
