Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica: A Symbol of Faith in Guam

The Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica is a significant religious and historical landmark in Hagåtña, Guam. As the first Catholic church in the Pacific, its origins trace back to 1669 when Jesuit missionary Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores established a modest chapel with the help of the Chamorro people. This marked the beginning of Catholicism in the Mariana Islands. The original chapel, made of rough logs and nipa thatch, was the center of the Spanish colonial settlement. Chief Quipuha of Hagåtña donated the land, and Queen Maria Ana of Spain contributed to the mission. A more permanent structure, built of coral stones, replaced the chapel in 1670. This building stood for centuries, witnessing Guam's colonial history and the growth of the Catholic faith among the Chamorro people. During the Second Battle of Guam in 1944, the cathedral was destroyed by American bombardment. However, its importance led to its reconstruction between 1955 and 1958. The present cathedral-basilica was dedicated on April 20, 1959. Its architecture features a white façade and a bell tower that rises above the surrounding palm trees, making it a recognizable landmark in downtown Hagåtña. The main entrance boasts a large stained-glass window depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The basilica enshrines the revered statue of Santa Marian Kamalen, a symbol of local devotion. The National Museum of the Dulce Nombre de María, located above the Chapel of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, features displays of inspirational art by local artists. The cathedral-basilica remains an active center of worship, with regular Sunday Masses and annual events. It welcomes visitors to embrace Guam's rich Catholic history and identity.
