4.7

The Agaña-Hagatna Pillbox stands as a tangible reminder of Guam's strategic importance during World War II. Built by the Japanese during their occupation (1941-1944), this six-sided reinforced concrete structure served as a coastal defense. Positioned a short distance from the high-tide line on the west side of the Paseo de Susana, the pillbox offered a commanding view of the surrounding coastline. The pillbox is divided into two chambers, each featuring a gun port. The structure's design includes an additional wall providing cover for the entrance on the land side. The roof is camouflaged with a 'crown' of coral rocks cemented on top. Today, the Agaña-Hagatna Pillbox is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it can be visited as part of a walking tour of Hagåtña. It offers visitors a unique perspective on Guam's history and a chance to reflect on the events that shaped the island. While exploring the pillbox, visitors can appreciate the serene environment and capture memorable photos of the picturesque backdrop. The site is surrounded by lush greenery, offering a tranquil escape into the past.
