The Iglesia San José El Viejo, or the Church of Saint Joseph the Old, stands as a striking reminder of Antigua's tumultuous past and enduring beauty. Construction on the church began around 1742, intended to enshrine a carved image of Saint Joseph by the renowned sculptor Alonso de la Paz. However, construction was halted when the Crown decreed the building be torn down because permission to build had not been requested. Despite initial setbacks, including an order from the King of Spain to close it due to incomplete permits, the church was finally completed and inaugurated in February 1762. Sadly, its completed form was short-lived, as the earthquakes of 1773 caused severe damage. The church was left in ruins and repurposed for secular use, including as a tannery. Today, the ruins of Iglesia San José El Viejo are a National Monument recognized in 1944 for their cultural significance. The remaining structure showcases a beautiful baroque facade flanked by bell towers, with columns exhibiting circular details. The site is also a popular wedding venue, blending history and romance amidst the weathered stones and lush gardens.
