Discover more about Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias

The Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, often called the Teatro Nacional, is a cultural hub in Guatemala City. Located in the Centro Cívico, it was built on the site of the old Fuerte de San José. The center's unique design, emulating a seated jaguar, distinguishes it from neighboring buildings. The cultural center was designed by Guatemalan architect Efrain Recinos, with initial designs from Marco Vinicio Asturias, and completed in 1978. The building incorporates elements of Mayan and modernist architecture. The exterior alludes to Mayan pyramids, the silhouette of a jaguar, and colors that represent Guatemalan culture. The center is named after Miguel Ángel Asturias, a Guatemalan writer and Nobel laureate. It houses the Gran Sala Efraín Recinos, a large proscenium theater; the Teatro de Cámara Hugo Carrillo, a smaller black box theater; and the Teatro al Aire Libre Otto René Castillo, an outdoor amphitheater. Additionally, the center includes plazas, salons, and the National Marimba Institute. The center is considered the most important venue dedicated to the performing arts in the country and region.
