The Iglesia San José El Viejo, located in Antigua Guatemala, is a historic church with a fascinating past. Construction began around 1742, intended to provide a home for a carved image of Saint Joseph by sculptor Alonso de la Paz. However, construction was briefly halted when the Crown ordered the building to be torn down because permission to build had not been requested. In 1751, an earthquake caused considerable damage to the partially built church. Work continued in 1759, and the Iglesia San José El Viejo was completed in 1761, with the carving returned two years later. Unfortunately, the 1773 earthquake caused irreparable damage. The ruins were then used as a tannery. Recognized as a National Monument in 1944, the site is now a popular wedding venue. Visitors can explore the ruins, characterized by crumbling arches and weathered stone walls, and appreciate the colonial architectural details. The facade features a high front between two towers that support the bell towers, columns with circular details, and valuable artistic altarpieces. The church's design reflects earthquake-conscious construction, with relatively low, heavily buttressed walls. The site is surrounded by greenery, offering a serene atmosphere for photography and reflection.
