Discover more about Sitio Arqueológico Mixco Viejo

Sitio Arqueológico Mixco Viejo, also known as Jilotepeque Viejo, is a captivating Maya site located in the north-east of the Chimaltenango department of Guatemala. Situated approximately 50 kilometers north of Guatemala City, the site sits on a mountain ridge, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Once the capital of the Chajoma kingdom, the city dates back to the Postclassic period. Originally named Saqik'ajol Nimakaqapek, the city was strategically built in the 12th century on a mountain top surrounded by ravines. This location provided a natural defense against rival kingdoms. Around 1450, the Chajoma moved their capital here to make it more inaccessible to hostile neighbors. Despite this, the Kaqchikel kingdom defeated the Chajoma, and Jilotepeque Viejo became subject to them. The city was conquered and destroyed by Pedro de Alvarado in 1525 after a three-month siege. The archaeological site consists of 15 groups with at least 120 structures, including pyramids, temples, palaces, and two ball courts. Architectural styles reflect both Chajoma and Kaqchikel influences. The site features a purer Chajoma architectural style in Groups A and B, while Groups C and E show Kaqchikel influence. The ballcourts were remodeled after the Kaqchikel fashion. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, climb the pyramids, and imagine life in this ancient city. The site also has a small museum.
